Worrying – Don’t do it!

Worrying affects everyone.
It’s undeniable fact, there’s so much out there in the world to make us worry and panic. The way we look, what impressions we make, the recession, rising fuel costs, illness… the list goes on. Image The Bible tells us not to worry.
Here are four biblical reasons not to worry:

Worrying achieves nothing.
Worrying is just a waste of time, it gets you nowhere nearer to resolving your worries; so why waste your time and energy on it?

Matthew 6:27
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these.

Worrying is not good for you.
Worry is bad for the mind, it makes you stressed and tense, it can even lead to physical illness.

Proverbs 12:25
Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.

Worrying is the opposite of trusting God.
The time and energy spent worrying would be much more beneficial as time of prayer, I recently found this interesting formula: Worry replaced by Prayer equals Trust.

Philippians 4:6-7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus

Worry shifts your focus to the wrong direction.
If we keep our thoughts and eyes focussed on God then we will realise and remember his love for us; that we really have nothing to worry about. If we focus on God and remember he has a great and amazing plan for us, then it is obvious that part of that plan is to guide and care for us.

Matthew 6:25

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?

So overall, try not to worry too much, although it is inevitable that you will, as will everyone else you know, remember that God is there to help you with your troubles.

1 Peter 5:7
Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

  1. Good reminder about not worrying – apart from it not changing anything, too much worry will seriously alter your health
